Susan's Sunflowers

My garden's sunflowers were much taller than the fence and their sunny faces contrasted with the old mossy oak behind them creating a tension between opposing natural objects. The impasto surface gives a lively viability to the flowers growing in front of their smooth, somber heritage oak tree. To enjoy the gift of nature with plenty of sky creates a spacial scale of light and shadow to give interest beyond the subject matter itself. My sunflowers are long gone, but the memory lives on in this painting.
